& our ethos
Lyn

We started a small business with the goal of promoting ethical, cruelty free, mindful consumption. However, we came to the harsh realisation that this was not the case.

Whilst some of our previous products were handmade by us, and the other products were ethically sourced, we found ourselves buying stuff in to sell to fill the gaps when we did not have enough time to make all our stuff by hand.

We weren't practising what we preached - in fact, we were actively going against some of our goals, such as minimal consumption and no use of animal products - and it hurt. So we came together and created 'This is Rubbish', where everything is handmade from trash and recycled materials, where we can feel good in what we are doing.

Not everything needs to be brand new. The materials in these items have already lived a life, perhaps more. What life can you breath into them next?

Recycled. Minimal packaging. Ethical. Vegan <3

We live in a world of overconsumption and monetisation. Where every holiday, every event, every spare moment, every celebration, every bad day, is filled with one word - buy.
This isn't our fault. However, we can't expect these big corporations to change if we don't show them we want... no, we need them to change. They don't care about our words - they care about our money.
It's okay to want nice things. But those nice things don't have to come with a price of harming the environment.
Lets change the way we look at our consumption habits. Lets change the way we look at waste. Lets change the way we gift. Lets prioritise minimal consumption, handmade, ethical, sustainable buying.

Hi, I’m Lyn, and I’m a recovering over consumer! I love shopping but one day I realised that I was using it to pacify feelings and therefore often wasting money buying items that I never ended up wearing or using because they weren’t a mindful purchase. Meanwhile, my daughter was only shopping vintage or second hand because she believed in playing her part in caring for the environmental impact wastage has. I started to take this on board and really consider my purchasing. I also took steps to heal personal issues and fell in love with running and being outside in nature as better ways of improving mindset and emotions. Creating ‘This is Rubbish’ with my daughter is my way of combining all I’ve learnt and trying to give something back. I love saving things from landfill, I love being in nature foraging, I love creating something new from something old. And I now love to promote more mindful consumption to help this beautiful world we live in.

Hi! I'm Jas.
I've always cared about the environment. As a teen, I decided to really dedicate myself and I pledged to never buy new clothes again, only buying second hand. Then after three years in film school, I learnt how wasteful and damaging the current film industry is.
I also love crafting and being creative, so it also hurt when I found out how damaging the crafting industry can be also - how it often uses unrecyclable materials and encourages overconsumption. In the last few years, after doing more research, I decided to become vegan, not only for the environment, but for the animals too.
I wanted to start 'This is Rubbish' with my mum not only so we could have a fun small business together, but so we can help educate and spread the message about overconsumption.
